Emmanuel Cooper OBE - 1938-2012
Emmanuel Cooper OBE was a potter with an international reputation, noted especially for high-fired porcelain and stoneware.
Forms include jugs and bowls with glazes, ranging from bright turquoise blues and vibrant yellows to gritty, textured, volcanic surfaces. His work was included in many important collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Royal Scottish Museum.
He was born in Derbyshire and set up his pottery in London in the sixties. Since then he had many one-person exhibitions. As its editor, Cooper transformed Ceramic Review, the international magazine of ceramic art and craft, into one of the world's leading applied arts journals. He was also a writer and critic in his own right authoring over 18 books on different aspects of art and craft.
Cooper gained a PhD at Middlesex University and was a Visiting Professor in Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art. He served on the council of the Craft Potters Association and was a board member of Arts Council, London. In 2002, he was awarded the OBE for services to art.
UCA awarded Cooper an Honorary Degree in 2003.
