Myrto Stamou
Attracted to anything creative since her early childhood in Greece, a love of fashion came easily to Myrto as it embodied an appreciation of natural beauty, sophisticated aesthetics and artistic sensitivity.
A natural inclination to art and design, combined with a fresh approach to fashion, means Myrto Stamou sees garments as stimulating, inspiring pieces that are ready to wear.
Myrto graduated from the University for the Creative Arts (Rochester) in 2009 with her graduate collection winning the most prestigious award for fashion graduates around the UK, seen as a golden ticket to success in the fashion industry. Winning the overall Gold Award and Best Womenswear accolade at Graduate Fashion Week 2009 led to high-profile media attention and catwalk shows, including Iceland Fashion Week, where she was one of a select group of foreign designers.
She spent several months in London working with acclaimed British designer Hannah Marshall, before heading back to her native Greece to establish her own fashion label.
In Greece, Myrto received a nomination for the Innovation Award at the UK Performance Awards 2010 and also collaborated with top UK High Street retailer, River Island, to produce two items inspired by her Graduate Fashion Week winning collection. The dresses entered the River Island stores in summer 2010 and are available worldwide via their online shop.
Myrto is now building her own brand based in Athens. The brand's design philosophy is defined by the designer's cultural references and desire to experiment. Artistic influences, intricate fabric manipulations, draping, contrasting textures and unexpected combinations of subtle and more dynamic elements all feature strongly in her work. Her designs illustrate a cool attitude towards urban dressing where a strong identity meets an unassuming way of expression.
