Canterbury Tales at Degree Show

Degree Show work being put up

The University for the Creative Arts (UCA) at Canterbury is opening its doors to the local community for its annual end-of-year showcase.

This year's Degree Show, at the New Dover Road campus, will feature hundreds of creations by the university's fine artists, designers and architects.

The free exhibition runs from Monday 14 June to Thursday 17 June, between 10am and 5pm each day.

Pro Vice-Chancellor, Dianne Taylor said: "We are proud to welcome the public to UCA Canterbury for our Degree Show - I think it is a great opportunity for local people to see what fantastic work is being produced in their city.

"There will be a wide-range of work on display that is guaranteed to inspire; no part of the campus has been left untouched as our students have transformed the white walls into pieces of art."

Highlights include: a loudspeaker and scaffold installation on the front of the building which aims to, "challenge visitors to see beyond the façade"; a collection of assorted underwear that has been built up since 2004 without the owners' knowledge; and, one resourceful artist will be selling paper cups with 'free' alcohol inside.

BA (Hons) Fine Art student, Vanessa Sanderson, will be displaying a set of postcards which took her on a journey around Canterbury.

"I bought somebody's collection of 200 postcards from a charity shop in the city and went about piecing together the person's life from the correspondence," she explained. "I couldn't figure out many of the relationships and stories, so I wrote to some of the addresses on the back of the cards.

"I got about five or six replies, mainly ones from people saying that the person in question had moved or died, but on one occasion I received a letter from the daughter of the woman whose postcard collection it was.

"I don't want to give anything away, but the results will be on show and the daughter will be making a guest appearance at the Degree Show."

Canterbury Degree Show 2009 While some students have produced work resulting from self-directed study, graduates from the Canterbury School of Architecture have focused on the region's transport infrastructure, coming up with design proposals for local hubs such as Manston and Lydd airports.

Over 350 graduating students will have their work on show; many will be on hand to present their creative visions personally at a special viewing on Friday 11 June between 6pm and 9pm.

Members of the public are invited to join UCA staff and students as well as their friends, family and industry professionals at this free event.

Degree Shows will also take place at:
