Students film live studio show at Maidstone Studios

Broadcast Media students' show Unsigned Live filmed at The Maidstone Studios

Broadcast Media students at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) have filmed a live music show at the famous Maidstone TV Studios.

Unsigned Live, a 30-minute studio production which showcases local bands, was recorded in the same professional facilities that are usually home to major network programmes, such as ITV1's Take Me Out.

Second year students on the Broadcast Media course, which is permanently based at The Maidstone Studios, created the show as part of a major university project. They collaborated with BA (Hons) Creative Arts for Theatre & Film students at UCA Rochester who made the sets and props.

Simon Welsford, Senior Lecturer for Broadcast Media, said: "Unsigned Live was a huge success. I was really impressed with the students' attention to detail, not just on the day of filming, but also with the bands that they managed to attract, the accompanying website they made and the buzz they managed to create.

"Basing the course at The Maidstone Studios offers a unique setting for our students and enables them to make utterly professional productions.

"It is impossible for this to feel like a student project because they are using a working gallery and studio, the crew have radio contact, even the presenter and bands have their own dressing rooms - it's a full-on television production which just happens to be made by students.

"We are very excited and fortunate to be able to make use of these facilities for our course."

Students had access to the professional facilities at The Maidstone Studios Unsigned Live was filmed in front of a live audience and presented by Kent DJ, Adam Dowling.

UCA students do not just take advantage of the technical opportunities that the live studio environment offers, they are regularly invited to gain work experience on major productions.

Simon added: "Gaining work experience is a major factor for those wanting to break into television and, thanks to our presence at The Maidstone Studios our students get to work on some of the biggest shows in the UK, such as Take Me Out, Frank Skinner's Opinionated, and much more."
