New degree courses announced

New fashion and media degrees announced at UCA

The University for the Creative Arts (UCA) is launching a number of new degrees for 2013.

Applications are today being taken for BA (Hons) Media Culture & Communication, BA (Hons) Fashion Retail Management, MA Media Communication and MA Journalism which will all begin in September 2013.

The three exciting media courses will be based at UCA Farnham's hugely respected School of Film & Media alongside its prestigious courses in Journalism, Film Production, Digital Film & Screen Arts, Photography, Animation and Computer Games Arts.

Sarah Jeans, Head of Film & Media at UCA, said: "We are very excited to bring these three new courses to UCA Farnham.

"We already have a rich history of producing Oscar-winning animators and filmmakers, talented journalists and award-winning producers and I am certain that these new courses will also produce highly-skilled graduates."

BA (Hons) Media Culture & Communication degree combines practical skills in digital media production with an understanding of the social, economic, cultural and technological factors and their impact on the media, and will produce graduates who are ready to work in a wide range of broadcast, online and new media.

MA Media Communication is a one-year post-graduate course that explores the fast-moving landscape of the media, its political and social influence around the world, and the impact of the internet revolution.

MA Journalism provides practical news-gathering skills and theory in new media as part of a one-year degree for post-graduate students.

Fashion Retail Management will launch at UCA Rochester BA (Hons) Fashion Retail Management will be based at UCA's famous fashion campus at Rochester which has prepared global fashion icons Karen Millen and Zandra Rhodes, among many others, for their worldwide success.

The course will prepare students for a career in managing a wide-range of fashion outlets, from High Street brands and department stores, to independent boutiques and online opportunities.

Thomass Atkinson, Head of Fashion at UCA, said: "This new degree is designed to develop and produce effective leadership skills among students, while at the same time nurturing a strategic understanding of the consumer and drivers of the demand chain to create specialist fashion managers for the industry.

"Students will be prepared to work for any size of retail operation and across all channels of the consumer shopping journey - whether it's in-store or through the web, mobile and social networking devices - in an analytic, strategic, targeted and forward thinking way."

Hollywood actress Natalia Tena starred in a 2012 UCA short film Dr Simon Ofield-Kerr, UCA Vice-Chancellor, said: "These new BA and MA courses for 2013 illustrate our commitment to creating new opportunities for students and providing first-rate graduates for the UK's ever-developing creative economy."

UCA's famous BA (Hons) Illustration course, which Where's Wally? creator Martin Handford graduated from, has recently moved to UCA Farnham.

It has also been announced that UCA's well respected BA (Hons) Graphic Design: Visual Communication degree is moving to UCA Canterbury for 2013.
