International students graduate from Pre-Sessional course
The first International students have graduated from a brand new course at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) which prepares them for life at university.
UCA's new International Department has created an improved Pre-Sessional course which gives students from outside the UK the opportunity to enhance their academic skills and boost their confidence ahead of their degree.
Students also receive practical lessons in art and design alongside English for Academic Purposes lessons.
More than 70 students completed the 5, 10 and 12 week courses at UCA Epsom this summer.
The artwork they produced during their studies was displayed in an impressive exhibition which was attended by UCA's Leadership Team, including Vice-Chancellor Dr Simon Ofield-Kerr, who presented the students with their certificates.
Helen Anderson, Director of International at UCA, said: "We don't always appreciate how tough it can be for an international student who has moved thousands of miles away from their families into a completely new culture.
"UCA's course helps students understand more about living and studying in the UK, as well as helping them to improve their English.
"The course not only gives our international students a big confidence boost ahead of their degree but it will also help them integrate with fellow students which will lead to a more satisfying and fulfilling time at UCA."
Student Tung Nieh, who as moved from Taiwan to study MA Design at UCA Rochester, said: "I really enjoyed the course, especially the way that we were taught academic English alongside enjoyable social experiences.
"I really like England since arriving at UCA and have fallen in love with the culture and English style. I've also made friends that I'll be sure to stay in touch with while in the UK."
The Pre-Sessional courses take place twice a year and help students develop vital academic study skills, such as research and essay structuring, plus practical art and design workshops which allow them to practise communicating a task or outcome.
Students who attend the course at UCA Epsom went on to study at all five of UCA's campuses.
