UCA Maidstone specialises in supporting research into photographic, video and film theory, particularly as they relate to contemporary fine art practices. Active researchers are interested in new developments in photographic practice, video and experimental film.

UCA Maidstone offers a strong base for practice based research degrees and holds regular informal seminars for research students and staff into the relationship between theory and practice. Staff and research student's interests include the relationships between medium, material and technology; structuralist film practices; expanded cinema, the body and performance; the everyday and the ethnographic and concepts of space, geography and identity
